6 Ingenious Excuses for Learning Social Dancing

Sometimes, we just need an excuse.  Some type of narrative we can utilize to trick ourselves into doing something, talking to someone, or walking through the front door to learn Social Dancing once and for all.

So we've compiled some ready made excuses for you.  They are logical enough that any brain will accept them and allow you to pursue this new and exciting hobby.

High School Reunion

You need a deadline, and your reunion fits the bill.  Reunions are all about sharing what you've done to reinvent yourself since those highly emotional, dramatic, and fond memory filled years in high school. Dancing can't grant you the power to go back in time and be more confident as a high school student, but it does offer the next best thing: Getting to show everyone how confident you are now.

What to Say

Say This "My high school reunion is coming up.  Cue the music... it's payback time."
Not This "It's not like anyone will be there, so I'll probably just skip it."

Wedding

Might be the most important and fancy dance party you'll ever throw in your life.  Whether you're planning the wedding for yourself, or if it's for one of your kids, or your sister's best friend's co-worker - just know that learning to dance is a skill you can use for wedding for the rest of your life, and plenty of moments in between.

Say This "You know, we have our son's/daughter's wedding coming up.  Let's learn how to dance..."
Not This "No one wants to see us dancing at the wedding. We'll learn for the next one."

Vacation

The objective of a vacation is to step outside of the normal day-to-day activities of your life and recharge your batteries in another location.  While some trips may require foreign currency exchange and some survival skills in a foreign language - social dancing is a language that can be exchanged in any location.  Bottom line - use your dancing on vacation.

What to Say

Say This "Before we book the hotel, let's see if there are any good salsa clubs nearby."
Not This "It's not like we'd ever have time to go out dancing."

Office Party

In the olden days, mid-level managers took golf lessons as a potential tactic to rubbing elbows with the high level executives.  You know, in the hopes that if they, somehow, perfected one of the most difficult sports in the world, it would, somehow, land them in favor with the C-Level suite of executives who would call a board meeting, examine the golf scores, and offer that mid-level manager one of their own jobs.

Or you could just learn how to dance so the next Office Party gives you some guaranteed leverage on the dance floor.  While alcohol will always be an option at a corporate shin-dig, there's a higher likelihood of embarrassing yourself with the booze than there is with the ballroom.

What to Say

Say This "It may not land me a promotion, but dancing at my Office Party will make the night more fun."
Not This "I think I'm going to drink more and take my chances."

New Year's Resolution

OK, learning to dance isn't just your average run-of-the-mill, or run-on-the-tread-mill New Year's Resolution.  It's a Megaresolution.  That's right, roll all of the New Year's resolution Greatest Hits into one Megaresolution by starting your dance lessons.

Exercise?  It's included.

Happiness?  Totally covered.

Stress Relief?  Forget about it.

Learning how to dance is a resolution, but resolution-speaking, that's the tip of the New Year's resolution iceberg.

What to Say

Say This "Dancing will knock out at least one of my New Year's Resolutions"
Not This "One of these days I'm going to try that out."

Valentine's Day

Whether you are celebrating February the 14th with your love, or you are single and allergic to candy hearts and chocolates - Valentine's Day is still a great deadline for learning how to dance.

Thoughts on V-Day Dancing For Singles

The Holiday is about love and showing appreciation, but who's to say you can't love or appreciate yourself?  Learning to dance is a great way to invest in your own happiness, to reward the hard work you've done, and even to dramatically improve your dating profile.

So whether you are planning on sharing your dancing with the love of your life, or if you want to do something to just "love life" a little more yourself - use Valentine's as your deadline to making it happen.

What to Say

Say This "I'm going to go outside of my chocolate and flowers comfort zone this year."
Not This "I'm not dancing, ever - and there's no holiday that could get me to do it."

Final Thought

Your brain is a security guard.  It will protect you from danger - real, implied, or totally bogus.  The quality of your excuse, however, will act as a card key with the highest level of brain security clearance.  You've got to pass through a series of gateways, your front door, your car, your nosy neighbor, but just continue to utilize your card key and before you know it you'll be walking into your local Arthur Murray Dance Studio.

There you'll be dancing within five minutes of arriving.  This way your brain won't have time to show up and try to spoil the party.

A goal is just future regret until you take action.  We hope this article inspired you to do just that.  Spend 45 minutes of your time and we know you'll discover something that will positively impact your life.
