11 Things you'll Never Hear on your First Dance Lesson

Have you ever had a hard opinion about something, even though you'd never tried it?

Before your First Dance Lesson, your mind can start creating all sorts of scenarios that have zero chance of happening.  Parts of this list are very common, some are absurd, all have been thought of, but none of them will happen.

11 Things you'll Never Hear on your First Dance Lesson

1. "Please, spin across the dance floor."

Sounds crazy, and will definitely never happen, but you'd be surprised what kind of phantom prerequisite skills our brains can cook up.

2. "We are performing on TV next week"

Rest assured, even if you were taking this lesson at the request of ABC executives, there is more lead time than one week before the first episode of DWTS

3. "Why aren't you wearing a dance costume?"

Pirate shirts, tight pants, or sparkly ballroom or latin costumes are usually only required on your second lesson (kidding).

4. "Before you walk in, please provide your dance training resume"

At no point will you ever need a dance resume, or dance experience to learn at Arthur Murray.

5. "Your file suggests that you haven't been dancing since you were born. Please leave immediately."

As weird as it may sound, a common concern about coming in for a dance lesson is a lack of dance experience. You don't need to be born dancing, and we are pretty certain no one else has.

6. "Don't bother starting this if you're not willing to commit long term."

Sure, there are some dancers that make this a long term hobby, but few people ever start out that way.  There are students who walk in to survive their daughter's wedding, a business function, or to have an easier time at a Salsa Club.  Lifelong hobbies aren't built in a day, so no worries there.

7. "What night of the week can you consistently commit to?"

Your appointments should center around your schedule, and the goals that you have for learning.  Whether it is afternoons or evenings, your teacher will arrange your lessons any time between 2-10pm to ensure that you make progress in a timeline that suits you.

8. "Sir, what are you doing here?  This is a dance studio."

It seems archaic, but there are still people that believe that ballroom dancing is something that is reserved for women.  Not true and more power to the gentlemen dancers out there.

9. "We only teach people who have always been interested and devoted fans of dancing."

For some people, learning to dance has been a lifelong pursuit.  For many others, it is a momentary decision and it makes absolutely no sense.... until they take their first lesson.

10. "If you can't keep up, there's the door!"

While this may make for a dramatic moment on a dance reality television show, it is not the style of instruction used at Arthur Murray Dance Studios.

11.  "Get your M@$%*##@(&#G frame up!"

Bad language and Arthur Murray teachers rarely go together.  While we can't vouch for things they may say on their own time at a sporting event, we can assure you that this style of teaching doesn't convey the professionalism of the company, and you won't hear it.
