Frequently Asked Questions About Competitive Ballroom Dancing

New to the world of competitive ballroom? You’re not alone. These FAQs will help you understand how it works, what to expect, and how to get started with confidence.

It’s partner dancing judged at events based on technique, timing, style, and presentation — with defined categories by level and age – there’s an event for anyone. Oh… and there’s costumes.

Not necessarily. Most Arthur Murray students compete with their instructors, especially in the early stages. Later, you can explore amateur partnerships if you choose.

Nope. Many students start from scratch and work their way up. All competitive events include a Newcomer category for students under one year on their dance program.

Any dance we teach, from the Latin, the Ballroom, the Nightclub styles, Country Western… you name it – it’s all on tap at any Arthur Murray Dance Competition.

Dance competitions for ballroom and latin dancing can be done with either your teacher or an amateur dance partner. Every Arthur Murray competition is part vacation and part confidence building dance event.

It varies, but most competitive dance program students can be competition-ready in just a few months with regular lessons and preparation.

Beginner events may allow simpler attire, but as you advance, costumes and shoes specific to each style will help enhance your look and movement.

Not at all. Competitive ballroom is more about precision, timing, and having a great time more than raw athleticism. Anyone can improve and anyone can compete.

There are costs involved, including entries, travel, attire, and coaching. But many students find it a worthwhile investment in their passion and progress.

We like to say that feeling “ready” is a past tense emotion. Your teacher will guide you through the process and point out opportunities where they believe you can succeed.

That’s totally normal and it means that you care. Confidence is a muscle – you have to challenge it to build it. That will fade quickly and the end result is a more capable and confident version of you.

Yes! That’s what most people do and that’s easy to experience with the lineup of Arthur Murray events.
