The Arthur Murray All Star Spotlight:  Evan Boyer

Evan Boyer is a talented guy.  We aren't just talking about the spontaneous singing, or a random pirouette in the studio.  He's had a chance to work as a New Student Specialist, Advanced Instructor, New Student Counselor, and in 2016, a Supervisor.

An All Star Supervisor.

So we caught up with Evan before he heads off to the Semi-Finals in Portland to get his take on the next round of the upcoming All Star Test.

AML: What's your Arthur Murray Story?

EB: I've been with Arthur Murray's since March of 2009, and officially on staff April of 2009. I started off in the Redwood City Studio with a top notch group of students and teachers and quickly fell in love with all this company had to offer. After Christmas break in 2009, I came back with a drive and determination to be the best, because my team expected nothing less. In January of 2010, I won the new student challenge and that set things off for me.

After hard work and determination and A LOT of help from my team and managers, I ended up winning New Student Specialist of the year 2 years in a row and being in the coveted winners circle for 2010 and 2011. On October 31, 2011 I started my journey as a New Student Counselor with Arthur Murray Hayward, and have continued to learn and grow as a manager. It's been a fun ride and I've learned so much from each of my coworkers here in Hayward.

In January of 2016 Chris and Daisey decided to help Evan (Healy) and I grow more within the organization by switching our roles, and helping us develop in a different way.  So that's when I became the Supervisor of the Hayward studio! Though extremely scary, it has been surprisingly rewarding. I couldn't have asked for a better career. I started as a former stage performer looking for something to get me through a year off and ended up a Supervisor of the top school in the Bay Area...not a bad gig!

AML: What was it like to find out that you made it to the Semi-Finals in Portland?

EB: It was sort of a shock for me. Since its my first time participating in the all stars as a supervisor it was a big deal to hold on to the legacy that my co manager set for me. I just wanted to do the best I could and was really happy when I found out!

AML: How did you react when you got the news?  Did you freak out, stuff like that?

EB: I didn't even realize the results had come out. I was driving home and Alex Doan sent me a congratulations text! I was like "for what?", and he said, "DUDE you won ALL STARS!"

It was an awesome way to find out.

AML: How many All Stars have you participated in?

EB: This is my 8th one.

ALL STAR FLASHBACK!  Preliminary Round, Arthur Murray Redwood City, August 9th 2011

AML: How has the process improved you as a Professional?

EB:
That is such a hard question! I think that every year the training hits a different chord. It reminds me why it is that I love what I do. So it's sort of a recharge of training for me and helps me motivate and train the staff.

This year, the emphasis on the benefits of dancing sheet, and how to ask different types of questions, was very fulfilling.  Also Amy Novotny's supervisor release was mind blowing. It helped with the preparation for our last district showcase and helped me mold a plan with each student that was uniquely their own.

I feel more empowered after each all star competition whether I place and move on, or not.

AML:  OK, make your shameless case for why you should advance to the World All Star Finals in Las Vegas

EB: I should advance to the finals because I care! I've want it so badly I can taste it! I think that our Area is the best in all of Arthur Murray's and I would love the opportunity to represent it and to make our people PROUD!

Final Thought

Evan Boyer is as engaging as he is versatile.  Now, as an All Star Quarterfinalist, he takes that engagement, versatility, and maybe even a spontaneous pirouette or two to the Semi-Finals in Portland in a few short weeks.  There he'll compete against other Supervisors to see who moves on to the World Finals in Las Vegas.  It's taken 8 attempts, four different positions, in two different studios, and that may be just the recipe for All Star success.

Either way, he's an All Star in the Hayward studio already.
