Dancing is good for you! No, really! In addition to strengthening your body and improving your mood, dancing helps build confidence and can even make you smarter. If you’re looking to fall in love with a new hobby, express yourself in a non-verbal way, find your inner strength to accomplish new goals, or develop better coordination, then dancing is your ticket to success!

Start at the Beginning

You’ve probably heard the expression “practice makes perfect,” but we actually believe that “practice makes improvement.” The goal of dancing isn’t to be perfect. It’s to have fun and improve your skills. Everyone has the potential to enjoy dancing, whether it is ballroom, jazz, hip-hop, or ballet. Don’t forget, every great dancer was once a beginner and no one gets better at anything unless you keep at it.

Think Fast on Your Feet

One of the fundamental elements of dancing is improving coordination and controlling your movement. When your mind is focusing on controlling different parts of your body at the same time, your brain is working double time which increases your ability to focus, problem solve, and think fast. In fact “a 2003 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that ballroom dancing at least twice a week made people less likely to develop dementia.”

Mind Over Matter

There is also proof that your brain responds to musical stimulation that triggers an emotional and physical response to sound. Basically, music makes us feel something. Being able to express that feeling in a nonverbal way is a great way to improve your mood and build your confidence. If you feel like you can express yourself and overcome fears through dancing, you’ll more likely to stick with it.
