Dance Advice for Humans

6 Things Dancers Do To Anger Corporate America

Don't think they haven't noticed.

The extra smiling, the socializing, the dancey things you're doing are showing up in the workplace.  Corporate America is aware of your new hobby, and don't expect any of them to condone any of this behavior.

6 Things Dancers Do To Anger Corporate America

1.  Your Posture Is Showing

Yes, that slumped shouldered, coffee swilling, version of you hasn't been around the old cubicle corral in a while.  Your posture is a dead giveaway that you have either started taking dance lessons, or secretly married a military school warden.

2.  Your General Happiness is Depressing

The most popular hobby in coporate America?  Food truck taste tester.  Second most popular?  Depressing conversations.  Your lack of attendance in the latter has put your membership in the depressed club in jeapordy. People are asking questions.  Very depressing questions.

3.  You Stopped Calling In Sick

Also known as the corporate vacation day, calling in sick is an art form that is steadily erroding due to your incresed healthy activity through dancing.  Three day weekends will be much more rare without the sick day "plus 1".  Perhaps an explanation to your spry life extending activities is in order?

4.  You Have the Company Office Party Circled (with a happy face) on Your Calendar

This move has put a real target on your back.  Your workgroup has been very specific about parties, and general morale boosting activities like music, socializing, and even... dancing.  Your little happy face just initiated a stare down missle strike.

5.  Your Walk to The Coffee Machine Looks Really Glamorous

The walk to the coffee machine could easily be mistaken in a game of charades as a scene from a prison, zombie, or movie about zombie prisoners.  What it should not look like is what you are currently doing.  A spring in your step? Maybe if your stock options just vested and it's early retirement time, but not for a simple cup of joe.  Consider yourself warned.

6.  You've Been Caught Practicing Dance Steps in the Workplace

People are trying to get their work done. If the HR rep wasn't taking a sick day, you may have been written up or in some "please-don't-dance-or-look-happy-near-me" sensitivity workshop by now.

Final Thought

In a perfect world, your boss takes notice, mentions the need for more graceful PowerPoint presenters, offers you a promotion, a hefty raise, and makes you the official company Entertainment Coordinator.  Maybe none of that happens, maybe your dance lessons give you just enough of a corporate reprieve to replace a sick day, to have the confidence to have a difficult conversation... or, heaven forbid, dance at your next office party.
