6 Myths About Dance Classes

We get it.  Dancing is not something you do everyday.  It is out of your element.  Nerves can show up before your first dance lesson.  Feeling this way makes you a human.  But like any normal human, you've heard stories, voices, even warnings under the veil of advice, that has stopped you from doing things outside your comfort zone.  Taking dance lessons is one of those things.

Guess what human?  The myths stop here.

Myth #1: “I wasn’t born a dancer”

Neither were we. Dancers weren’t born dancers. Engineers weren’t born engineers.

Dancers, engineers, jugglers, magicians, school bus drivers, and every other occupation or skill takes lessons. We believe that there is a dancer in all of us. Our curriculum and dance classes can turn anyone into a dancer. So, in a sense, if you were ever born – then we can make you a dancer. Case closed.

Myth #2: “Learning to dance is difficult”

In 1911, that’s what many would-be dance students were saying, and that’s where a young guy named Arthur Murray developed a ground-breaking solution: The Four Basic Elements.

You see, with these simple, everyday ingredients, he found that you could combine them to create any level of movement in any dance. Today, we still utilize the Four Basic Elements to help people survive, or stand out, on the dance floor.

Myth #3: “Lessons will be too expensive”

Anything that you’ve never tried is too expensive; Especially if you’re not sure if you’ll ever use it. So, until you take a free lesson for yourself, dance lessons could seem like one of those products at a mall kiosk, or something “too good to be true” on an infomercial. The solution: – try the free lesson and dispel some of the myths about dance lessons and your ability to benefit from them.

Myth #4:  “I don’t want to take a lesson until I’m ready”

This myth really begs the question: “What are you waiting for?”

Like, seriously… is there a sign? A text message?

If you are reading this article... then that is the only sign you need.  There will never be a perfect time to get married, go on vacation, have a baby, or to take a dance lesson. You’ve just got to schedule it, show up, and see that you were more ready than you thought (the dance lessons, that is).

Myth #5  “I have no rhythm”

Well, let’s think this through.

Let’s say you don’t have any milk at home. Rather than going to the store, you decide, instead, to tell everyone that you see, "I don't have any milk at home."

Apart from sounding crazy, your problem prompts you to skip out on that cereal convention you love, the milk mixer at work, and even giving the milk toast at your brother's wedding.

Okay, this is weird, but here's the punchline:   What do you really do when you don't have milk?  You go shopping for it.  Guess what, we stock milk (rhythm) at our dancing grocery store.

And we've got an endless supply!

Sure beats just talking about not having it.

Myth #6 “I don’t have a partner”

Believe it or not, you can learn to dance without a partner... and it's actually an advantage.

When you see a partner as your only point of entry, one of these two things can happen:

1. Unsuccessfully recruit a partner over a long period of time... and not take lessons while you wait.

2. Successfully recruit a partner that really would prefer to do something else.  Which can, unfortunately, lead to them recruiting you away from this hobby.

Learning to dance on your own allows you to:

1.  Learn at your own pace, interest level, and ability.

2.  Burn more calories since you'll be working one on one with a professional instructor.

3.  Cut the wait time back by 10,000% - you can contact us today and be dancing by tonight.

4.  Investigate the experience and offer first-hand details for your future dance partner should they decide to join you at some point.

5. Develop some great dance goals and healthy side-effects from your new dance hobby.

Final Thought

You are so close!

This may be the month, week, or day of your very first complimentary lesson at Arthur Murray.  It's designed to debunk any dance myths that have stopped you in the past, and it will set you on the right course for dancing in the future.

You will be dancing within the first 5 minutes of your lesson.

The moment that happens, all the myths start to drift away.  By the end of your appointment, you'll be an Arthur Murray dance student on a journey filled with exercise, confidence, and learning a skill that is both practical and exciting.

With those myths out of the way... we look forward to seeing you on one of our dance floors sooner than later.
